Registration Update…2010 PCP2P

So, we need to clarify what is going on with registration.  We opened registration today for the racers who raced last year, as a thank you for having faith in us during our first year!  This has backfired on us a little, as we’ve had a number of people register today that did not race last year.  There’s still a lot of spaces left for the event, but as a result of the poaching, we will shut the athlete360 site down at noon tomorrow (Feb. 11th).  Registration will re-open at 9:00AM on Monday, February 15th.  We couldn’t be more thrilled with the enthusiasm everyone is showing for the event, but we also want to be certain new racers all get the same chance at the spaces available.  I shutter to think about creating another LT100 debacle.

Another thought to file away for 2011, and I would love to see some comments here on this – do you think the best way to handle registration is to simply open it up on a given day  and let it go first-come-first-served?  I personally do not like the lottery system.  Thoughts?

Happy Winter Riding.

It’s “was” the First…and it Definitely Isn’t the Last!

The first Park City Point 2 Point went off without a hitch over Labor 2009.   We had an amazing turnout of local, regional and national racers (11 states represented) – all arrived bright and early Saturday morning with apprehensive grins in place.  We ended up with a total participation number of 168 people, truly a number exceeding our initial goal for the first year of the event.  In the end, merely a handful pulled-the-plug on the day, and only a few more didn’t make the 3:30PM cutoff (some of which continued the journey to the finish anyway – true endurance junkies).

From our perspective, this event is going to live on!  The goal is to have an event to come back to year after year (or skip one along the way), and challenge your personal record on the course, or the person who nipped you at the finish line in 09.  We are so grateful for the support of the racers in this first year event, as we all know many times first year events get overlooked with a, “I’ll see how they do this year” attitude.  Well…judging from some of the feedback drifting around online, I think we’ll have one heck of a turnout next year.  Take some time to read about how the day unwound for other racers (excerpts and links below). I always love reading BLOG race reports, often times we get so ingrained in our own little race day battle we miss the happenings which may be unfolding right in front of us.

Here is one of my favorite stories of the day (close second to Grizzly Adam and his story of Karma). Everyone saw SlyFox out making sure everyone was…”getting paid” to race.  So Pat rides by and Sly pays up, Pat stuff the dollar in his jersey pocket not thinking much more about it.  A few more miles down the trail Pat puts a 1/2 inch slice in his tire.  He starts into the repair and quickly realizes putting a tube into the tubless setup just isn’t going to cut it.  At this point the mad scramble starts, looking for some type of material he could line the tire with so the tube stayed inside the actual tire.  He tried the box the tube came in but it was too soggy, then he recalled an article he’d read a while back stating you could use a dollar bill in this situation to line between the tire wall and tube.  The light-bulb overhead turns on…Sly paid me for racing and I have a dollar bill!  The beauty of this story is Pat finished the race on the dollar bill patch!

Anyway, enjoy some of these stories if you haven’t already.  And…Thanks again to everyone participating in this now annual event!

ALEX GRANT’S BLOG REPORT Park City Point 2 Point – Harder than Leadville….No kidding, that was tough. The course was 25 miles shorter but with the same amount of vertical gain and 74 miles more single track! My legs were much more sore yesterday and that much single track takes a toll on your whole body

PUA SAWICKI ON THE PCP2P The race is one of the best in America, making most US endurance races look amateur. Pua and I cannot say enough about how incredible the Park City area

GRIZZYLY ADAM AND HIS KARMIC RACE REPORT As I rode off I hoped I that I would not have need for the tool.

SONYA LOONEY LOVES PARK CITY! There are not many days out of the year where you can say you rode about 75 miles of primo singletrack, and even if you’re having a bad day, the quality of the race is AWESOME.

THE CARBOROCKET – - BRAD KEYES diabolical and Sadistic….Those two words describe not only the course but the race organizers of the PCPP to a “T”.

BRAD MULLEN REFUSES TO GROW UP After I finished and was at my car cleaning up and hacking and weezing, my wife of 25 years said, “why do you do these things?”

MONAVIE-CANNONDALE’S RACE REPORT Team Monavie-Cannondale’s Alex Grant was quoted after the race saying, “This is the only race I know that has more singletrack  than the BC  Bike Race.”

Six Days…Time to Get Rested Up.

So just a few things to think about.

  1. Registration closes on 8/31 (Monday) at Midnight.  There is no day of, or on-sight registration.
  2. Please find a way to get to the Start Zone (Quinn’s Junction Recreation Center).  We may not leave cars parked out there all day.  If you need a ride, please check out the Racer Handbook section of the site.
  3. The course is starting to get marked.  We marked the Round Valley section today from the official start zone all the way back around to the Nordic Trails headed out toward the Rail Trail.  I will pick up there tomorrow and mark through Lost Prospector at the very least.
  4. PACKET PICKUP IS FRIDAY NIGHT BETWEEN 1 – 6PM AT THE CANYONS.  You must pick up your packet and sign all the appropriate waivers then.  RACER Meeting at 6PM, White Pavilion near the bottom of the Gondola in the Forum at the Canyons.  The Racer meeting is not mandatory, but it will make you a smarter racer if you attend.
  5. EMERGENCY NUMBER FOR THE DAY OF THE RACE.  This also can be used in case you get lost, really.  We will try our best to get you back on course.  435-216-5111

That is all for now…stay tuned (and watch the Racer Handbook section of the site for updates).

The Numbers Are In…

So we’ve chopped the course down to the promised 75 miles! We will have a Google Earth Map Posted up tomorrow night. Here are the details as they stand now (please note, these may change just a tad here and there as we re-ride the course with a much more sensitive GPS unit).

Total Miles As of now are right on 75 Miles, 90% of which is true 1-Track, and there is 14,080′ of climbing.

Leg 1 of the Duo class will ride 34.3 miles and climb 6,695′. Leg 2 of the Duo class will ride 40.66 miles and climb 7,385′. Leg 1, for a couple of reasons, miles being the obvious, will be the easier section. For the most part, this leg is on pretty easy riding trail until you get to the Bald Mountain loop of Deer Valley. Leg 2 is more technically demanding over the duration of the miles.

One more time, this is not concrete and these numbers will definitely fluctuate a little as we polish the course. The time is now, sign up and “do what your afraid to.”

All “possible” trail has been GPS mapped!

First of all, thanks to everyone for being patient – we wish you would register, but understand a lot of you want to see the course first.

Here is the lowdown. We’ve mapped the entirety of available trail without any trail crossings or use of the same trail twice. We have approximately 90 miles of total trail, don’t get alarmed yet…. and are going to be narrowing that down to between 75 – 80 miles as we’ve discussed all along. The vert seems to be about what we’ve thought, which is going to fall around 12,000′. Take a look at our google map page (link from the bottom of the course page on our site) and you’ll be able to see the course as it stands now. Our mapping guru is going to be banging on the files the next few days, so keep on eye on it.

Couple of things worth mentioning. We will be eliminating the Devo Downhill and Tour de Homes portion of the course from the Snow Park are a Deer Valley (this is good)! Additionally, we will not climb the maintenance road of Deer Valley to get to the top of Bald Mountain. I’m not going to say the climb is easier, because it is not, it is just must more pleasant to climb single track than a service road.

I will have a ton on the trail quality of the race in my next BLOG post, but I will say this, to have a race (point to point non-the-less) in which well over 90% of the course is on single track and you never lap/loop or use the same trail twice is pretty damn amazing. This is going to be a killer event!

Take a “racecation” in Park City, UT This Labor Day!

Staycation: staying in your own backyard (basically not taking vacation). Mancation: taking a trip with a bunch of dudes.  Try this on for size, Racecation!  If it hasn’t been coined yet it should have been.  I mean think about it, BC Bike Race, they feed you and move a tent around for you all week – all you have to do is show up and suffer.

So get ready to make a mini racecation out of the PCP2P this Labor Day weekend.  Friday night will be the pre-race meeting, so get here a little early and check into your room at The Canyons Resort.  Maybe get a little pre-ride in before the racer meeting.  Next morning, up early and off to do the race.  After the race, hang out and listen to the FREE concert in the forum at the canyons.  Sunday and Monday…more riding and hanging out in beautiful Park City.  If you think about it, you only are going to ride 75 miles of the nearly 400 miles of trail in the area during the race – so there’s way more to explore.

Book you room for the weekend at the Canyons, they are offering a great rate for racers and you’ll only need to stumble a few hundred feet to land in your bed after the race. $129 for a room – book it here.

New Trail Teaser

Trail Teaser #2 – Presented by Hammer Nutrition

The Course…

We continue to plug away at mapping the course, we had hoped to have it complete by this weekend but the moist weather (which has been a good thing outside of prohibiting riding) has slowed us considerably. Rest assured, the course is coming together, once this rain stops today we will be out there riding (I mean mapping).

Registration is open, and we have 300 slots to fill!

On a sad note, the American Mountain Classic threw in the towel today on their late August stage race event to be held at Brianhead Resort. On a positive note, you can now train to peak the 5th of September at The Park City Point 2 Point, also right here in Utah! And…we are now truly one of Utah’s only mountain bike endurance races.

More trail research tomorrow! Details to come.
